REPORT OF PHYTOCHEMICAL TEST.
INSTITUT PENYELIDIKAN,
PERHUTANAN MALAYSIA.

Date of sample : 28 February 2008.
Sample : Melada pahit - 100/08.

Objective of phytochemical test ;
To detect the presence of some important phytochemical constituents that usually exhibit biological activities surch as alkaloids, sppnins, flavonoids, tannins, triterpenes and steroids.

# THE FOLLOWING TEST WERE CARRIEDS OUT ON 5.0g OF POWDER MATERIAL:

1. TEST FOR ALKALOIDS.
The plant was macerated in chloroform by followed by addition of ammoniacal chloroform. The extract was then treated with 10% sulphuric acid and tested with Mayer's reagent. Formation of white precipitates the presence of alkaloids.
Result:

CONCLUSION : Alkaloids were not detected

2. TEST FOR SAPONINS.
The methanol extract was mixed with distilled water in a test tube. The formation of stable froth for at least 15 minutes indicates the presence of saponins.
Result:

RESULT : 1+
CONCLUSION : Saponins were detected

3. TEST FOR FLAVONOIDS
The chlorom extract was dissolved in ether and shaken in 10% ammonia solution. Formation of yellow colour in ammonia layer indicates the presence of flavonoids.
Result :

CONCLUSION : Flavonoids were detected

4. TEST FOR TANNINS AND POLYPHENOLIC COMPOUNDS
The methanolic extract of plant material was mixed with 1% ferric chloride solution. Formation of blue black colour indicates the presence of hydrolysable tannins, while brownish-green indicates that of condensed tannins.

CONCLUSION : Condensed tannins were detected

5. TEST FOR TRITERPENES/STEROIDS
The chloroform extract of plant material was tested using Liebermann-Buchard reagent. Formation of reddish colour indicates the presence of triterpenes and greenish colour for steroids.
Result :

CONCLUSION : Triterpenes/Steroids were not detected
